How is a beard transplant done?

Grafts are taken from the donor area at the back of the scalp and placed one by one into the beard/moustache area, mimicking the natural exit angle of facial hair. Angle and direction are the most critical factors for a natural look.

The design, cheek line, chin and moustache density, is planned around your facial symmetry. If you already have a beard, gaps are completed so the whole stays coherent.

  • Realistic density with natural angle and direction
  • Suitable for scar, burn or sparse areas
  • Bespoke design to your facial symmetry

FUE vs the older strip method

Both methods take follicles from the back of the scalp. The difference is how the follicles are removed.

FUE (our method)
Older strip (FUT) method
Removing follicles
Follicles are taken one by one
A strip of skin is cut and removed
Donor scar
Tiny, dot-like marks remain
A line-shaped scar can remain
Placing into the face
One by one, at a natural angle
One by one, at a natural angle
Wearing hair short
Usually comfortable
The line scar may show

The right method depends on the person. Your doctor will tell you which suits you.

Suitability

Who is it for?

It suits people with sparseness or gaps in the beard/moustache and a sufficient donor area. Suitability is confirmed by the doctor's assessment.

  • Sparse or patchy beard/moustache
  • Scar- or burn-related hair loss
  • Adequate scalp donor reserve

How the beard comes through

After a beard transplant, growth happens in stages. The timings below can vary from person to person.

  1. 0-3 days

    Early healing

There is mild redness and crusting in the area. You clean it as your doctor describes.

  2. 1-2 weeks

    Crusts shed

The small crusts fall off and the skin returns to normal.

  3. 3-6 weeks

    Temporary shedding

Some transplanted hairs may shed. This is normal and the follicles stay in place.

  4. 3-4 months

    New growth

New hairs start to come through. They are thin at first and thicken over time.

  5. 6-12 months

    Filling in

The beard gets denser and nears its final look. Results vary from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

Questions on your mind

Will the transplanted beard look natural?

Grafts are placed mimicking the natural exit angle of facial hair, so a natural look is the goal once healing completes; results vary by person.

Can I shave?

After the initial healing period you can shave and shape your beard normally; your doctor will tell you the exact timing.

How long does it take?

Usually a few hours depending on the area size, performed under local anaesthesia.

Is it permanent?

Because the follicles come from the permanent scalp donor area, transplanted hairs are generally permanent.
